Shadow Wolves.
Umbra Lupus
BASICS:
Appearance: The Shadow looks like a wolf, and ranges from six feet at shoulder to the largest being eight and at length anything from five to seven feet. Shadows have large leather wings joined at the shoulder to the body. They are spanned enough to hold the weight of the shadow. They are silent however, like an owls wings. Also is the more extended claw, second from the instep on both forepaws, however it will protrude like a normal claw when the claws are retracted inward.
Black as sin and sleek there is no other pelt color a shadow can be, as known. There are only two other colors on the Shadow’s body: The glinting murderous purple of their eyes. It shines like oil but it sharp. There is no apparent pupil in the eyes of Shadows, though they do see. The only other color of a shadow is the white of their teeth, which, no matter what has been consumed still stays glinting white.
Scent and Sound: Shadows posses no scent to them, though they have a corporeal form they hold the characteristics of their nature, this extends to their ability to make sounds. The Shadow has a wide range in vocals anything from a meow-like sound and hiss of a feline to the common bark and growl of the canine. These sounds must be made manually, thus with intent on making the noise.
Age Range/Weight: The Shadow Wolf’s life span is not well known, to record the body of a Shadow has not been found by man. It is widely believed that a Shadow will waver from existence like the shadows of people. Another common theory is that Shadows will live five times the age of their human, at that humans’ death, provided the shadow was the cause. A Shadow seems to sense it’s time is drawing near because the poison in the body starts to build up, and no matter what they do it will not lessen. It may be the poison that kills them, but again, no body has ever been found. Their age seems more unimportant to them, he human’s age does matter. Power and cunning rules the life of a Shadow.
The weight of a Shadow is paradox, because they are nothing and yet have a real form the weight shifts. At a maintained level the corporeal form tends to be anywhere from 150 to 250 pounds, which depends on the Sin/gender/and age of the Shadow.
Prey: Shadows will prey on anything that lives breaths and bleeds. They are carnivores, but will not consume meat unless they have killed it themselves or were participating in the hunt. They prefer the flesh of humans above anything, but catching a dracling is a wonder most befit as to them the taste of dragon is a delicacy.
Power*abilities*/personalities: Most Shadows created are Male, though females do come around, they do not differ much from the males. They do tend to be slightly thinner, as they more often represent Lust with thinner muzzles and sharper icy eyes.
Shadows are cruel and love to kill simply for the joy of spilling blood. They do eat however to maintain their living forms. They will hunt alone or in a pack and use varied methods to kill, often if it is meat they intend to consume, they will not extend the poisoned claws on their instep as they are not immune to one another.
The poison they create is a special toxin that runs in their blood making it slick and oily in appearance, fire is the cure for it, but the poison is fast acting no matter the amount it will kill a fit adult human male within an hour. It wears the prey out, numbing some organs while destroying others, causing internal bleeding. Before the final stage, the prey will start to cough thickly and feel groggy and bloated but severely thirsty. Many of the major organs are about to fail and the lungs are starting to fill with fluid which brings about the coughing. As it draws into a wet hacking and blood is in the cough then it has entered the last stage of effect. In the last stage before death, the poison will cause the prey to bleed from the seven open holes of the body. *ears, nose, mouth and genitals* during this last stage the prey can no longer run and convulses violently experiencing heart palpitations and seizure while being asphyxiated by fluid in the lungs.
This unique toxin in their bodies varies with each shadow though it does the same thing, this difference owns to the fact that it is mixed with their blood. A concentrate of the poison is in the large claw second from the instep on each forepaw. All claws on a Shadow are retractable to keep them from wearing down and becoming dull. When drawn in the longer claw which is about 3 inches in length appears to look normal.
This switchblade like claw coupled with their silent steps/flight and speed make them formidable opponents to one another. Shadows do fight other Shadows, it is in their nature to dominate others, and lead, a true fight is a death fight, often finding a victor for a short time only too to die.
Shadows can see other shadows and attack them in their element, though often humans cannot detect it. A Shadow Wolf has the ability to meld with the real non-living shadows of objects and people and stay there for an indefinite amount of time. They make Shadows darker, but not solid, when a human walks over the shadow of another human and a Shadow Wolf hides there nothing is stepped on...they are insubstantial like smoke.
Despite that their nature tends to be aggressive there is a more communal side to them and they do work together. They are commutative when relaxed and found to be expressive and like to impress. Each does have its own personality; though the base behavior depends on the Sin, it is born under. *see separate Document for Sin explanations*
Intelligence: Very high thinking, though most Shadows are vain. They tend to be critical and love the appearance and try to be impressive towards one another, and towards things, they live around. Residing near human villages to work upon the beings living there gives them a thrill.
This is a beast of indulgence, who does take pleasure in things for the simple act of doing them. They consider it, perhaps, but often will do and consider a consequence to the actions later. Most of the time the only killing act that they reflect and think deeply about is their naming Kill.
ORIGIN/LIFE:
The first lives of Shadow Wolves were unknown, though as long as man has existed with known Sin then it is believed that Shadows lived.
A human who has done a greater wrong creates them unconsciously. It is not the first Sin that man does but rather the last and the certain amount of which of the Seven Deadly Sins were done.
**The Sins: Sloth/Sadness, extravagance/Lust, greed/Avarice, gluttony, pride, wrath, envy.
These Sins represent the Shadows and all their base characteristics in behavior and attitude, as each does have its own personality.**
When a human, weather Male or Female, creates a Shadow it takes on life in a pack. Shadow Wolves, like normal Wolves do run in packs, lead by an Alpha. Rank breaks down as thus: Alpha (2), Beta (2), Delta (up to 4), Gamas-all others, and Zero(s)- ‘new borns.’ The human in question does not wish the Shadow into life, but rather wills it, drawn by the scent of the dark heart that created it. Though how much Sin and what kinds in amount are taken to build the Shadow are still unknown we do know that only humans can created it, and more so adults some time starting in the teenage years.
Shadows are ‘born’ within the pack, though they seem to form corporeal bodies rather than be borne by a female Shadow. These new Shadows are treated like familiars, and do not know life as a pup. “Born” at full growth they can feel the tug of the scent that is their human creator and instinctively search the person out, though not strictly to kill them first thing.
A shadow cannot find full rest until it has destroyed it’s human, often, after the death the shadow is then named by those if it’s pack, based upon anything from the time/date/manner/ place or even weather.
A shadow does not live long in the world before killing its human, though sometimes a shadow will wait a year or more thinking and plotting, as it is in them to show their natural skills. A shadow’s life is long, so to them a year or two is nothing, however they know the human life is not as greatly gifted with many years and no Shadow wants to be disgraced by not killing the human that made it.
BREEDING BIRTH/BELIEFS:
Though rare, females will bare young at any time of the year after a gestation of of just two months having one or two pups. A case of Twins is seen with great relevance and treated respectfully. However, twins or not these Shadows seem at first to have no purpose and are considered lifeless Shadows. The Lifeless are considered secondary Sins or Vices, which divides into many different types depending on the breeding of the parents.
Shadows, despite their nature and behavior are good parents when there are offspring. However, abnormalities are quickly destroyed. A shadow is not a shadow unless it is as dark as the sin that bore it, literally. In Some cases an abnormality of color will preserve for a decade or two, if it is born of the Alpha pair, or a Shadow of respected rank. However, at the death of said parent(s) much of the time the abnormality is hunted down and destroyed. Color abnormalities are Rare, but there are several variations which can result in different treatments.
Freckling: Common-small pinpoint to quarter sized spots of another color. Characteristically on the face and forelegs.
Spotting: Common- also called ‘salt and peppered’ similar to Freckling, only all over the body. If there is a concentration on the face and forelegs more than anywhere else it’s considered body freckling.
Striped: Uncommon- similar to a tiger pattern, can be few stripes or many and arranged in many body styles.
Leucism: Rare-A reduction of all Pigmentations, not just Melanin. This results in odd patters that are neither spotted/striped/or freckled but a mixture. Or it can be a muting of all colors resulting a a gray and ‘dirty’ toned coat.
Albinism: Supremely Rare: 1 out of perhaps 10,000 shadows born will be like this. Unless there are certain circumstances, these tend to be killed upon birth. Purple eyes and a white or light gray coat characterize albinism here. They can be ‘husky patterned’ in that there is a white and light ray mixture.
Complete Albinism: Supremely Rare- 1 out of 100,000 Shadows born are true albino. These Shadows are pink eyed, pink coat monsters. Because they are so rare, they are considered a misfortune to many Shadow Clans. Some however may see it as a use for power. Often times these Shadows will not see a full day before being killed.
The lives are rather more forfeited and their behavior more wild. These Shadows tend to be killed by their others before long-term growth, or attach to a human, drawn by some scent that a shadow knows, and killing them. These humans do not create a known Shadow, and it is thought possible that this ‘lifeless Shadow’ may have been a predestined. Shadows do believe in a form of higher power. They ask blessing of their higher power to give them good hunting, to keep poison in their veins and speed in their steps. In dealing with these ‘lifeless’ they turn to the higher power for words of advice. Often the Shadows dance around Fire, a ceremony, greets the idea of asking the higher power. They are keen to move about in these ritual dances.
A human does not see these ceremonies unless they are to be killed. However, sacrifice is normally of another Shadow, thrown to the fire. They dance to the fire and the poison of their veins calling to whoever their god might be, however they do dance to show happiness and naming ceremony as well, in which the Shadow has killed its human and gets its life name.
The name is presented by the oldest Male Shadow Wolf in the pack, often this new named wolf must also fight the elder and leave a mark to prove itself worthy of the name it was given, thus most Shadows do have a scar of some kind. They will dance about the fire, doing three turns around it before the named can attack the elder. Leaping through the fire is a brazen move and seen, to the Shadows, as an act of re-life. To pass through the world of no Shadow and back again without death, as many youth who leap misjudge and do become harmed there is mocking following the naming. Death with such a move is common, and those who survive and are not crippled are more respected.
ENEMIES:
There is only one known enemy of the Shadows, as everything else can fall to it easily. Dragons, it is the Shadow’s belief that while they are the Cardinal sins of man and made by man that nature had made dragons, which represents the Virtues. Along Dragons of winged and Fire breathing nature there are Komodo dragons and Monitor Lizards also viewed as threat by the Shadows for close relativity and choosing to be ‘dragons who left their wings for the land’ *See separate Document for Virtues*
LEGENDS OF THE SHADOWS:
There are some legendary Shadow Wolves.
The Blind Master is the oldest living Shadow and the only one living that has another color in his pelt. Due to his age *Age unknown* Grey fur has lined along his muzzle and sides. He also has eyes of blue, blind from his many years and his fights. The scars that cross his body line from generations of Shadows.
There are some that have taken to believing that he is more than just another Shadow or that he was not created by a human, but by an enemy, a Virtue who made Vice.
Lung Tic Chuan Ren, a dragon who was earth bound is known as the savior of High Races. After much ordeal, the Shadows were forced to accept his presence and assisted him in his finding the meaning of his name. The ‘Song of the Shadows’ or ‘The Naming of the Dragon’ is the ballad created by the pack who assisted him. He’s the only known Virtue accepted by those of Vice and Sin.
“No one can catch and hold a shadow, so they’ll never get me.” Sanketsu Kishi Tala, known by the 3 words ‘Suffocation Night Wolf’ in meaning. He is a Shadow who is not Shadow. He is the only one known to ever posses or attempt to create a human form. It is thought that instead of the death of the human, who created him, Sanketsu’s father fornicated with her and Sanketsu was born.
His existence was known to the pack and he is a wolf like them however he was born a ‘lifeless’ Believed to have been born in the feudal era for his choice of loose fitting, style clothing and the sword he carries on his belt. He hides a knife on his person though where is not certain. He holds a milky pallor despite his walking in the day light; he shows an interest in watching people walk by, examining them. He has midriff length hair, dark as pitch and eyes that glint and gleam with purple for their color.
He is known for killing humans that he watches and judges unclean in the world, male, and female alike. His first kill was believed to be Suffocation by crushing of the windpipe; however, he did kill another Shadow first, and prides this so he was named for it.
Sanketsu still belongs to a pack to this day, though spends more time in the human shape amid the people. When he is needed he is called, or when he seems to need assistance then his pack will come for him.
He has various scars running the course of his lean body, some from Shadows, and some from people. One in particular is a large coarse scar across his left hand side that he is overly touchy about, and sometimes will hold his left side lightly when he seems to want to think or be away from some place. The Blind Shadow gave this to him.
A Shadow of different color roams. She’s an leucistic female black on her undersides and white on top. Sanketsu’s Sister. She goes by the name of Raissa, and is born of the same parents but at a different time from Sankestu. Because Sanketsu became involved in her life, being present when she was born she was not killed. Her father rejected her, and her mother balked at first but came to care for her. Raissa left, having gained knowledge of her demise from her wandering and listening. Raissa means Thinker, which fits well with her. She named herself Raissa and thanks the powers for her protection.
